Aprl 21 - San Antonio. Despite starting the game with two point guards in Steve Nash and Steve Blake, the Lakers couldn't control the ball, missed too much and lost 91-79 at San Antonio in game 1 of their Western Conference first round series.

The Lakers really missed Kobe Bryant scoring punch. They scored just 15 points in the first quarter and never could really recover. Every time they got close the Spurs had an answer. Steve Nash returned after missing 9 games with a injury and was obviously out of rhythm in a team that committed 18 turnovers.

Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard combined well in the interior game but the team couldn't spread the floor, missing 12 of 15 three-point attempts. Pau had 16 points, and led the team in rebounds with 16 and assists with 6 while Howard had 20 points and 15 rebounds. It was not enough but it left the impression that in could be the key for L.A. to give San Antonio some trouble.

For the Spurs Tony Parker finished with 18 points and 8 assists and Manu Ginobili added 18 points in 18 minutes coming from the bench and was particularly hurtful when the Lakers got close by the end of the third, he scored the Spurs final 8 points in the period to put San Antonio comfortable ahead 70-57. The Lakers were never closer than 9 points after that shot.

Althought the Lakers weren't intimidated by the Spurs, their major deficits were clearly exposed. Their two-point-guard starting line-up was in part due to the good basketball Steve Blake has been playing lately in the absense of Steve Nash but it also showed how thin L.A.'s backcourt is now with Kobe out. And what to say about their bench? They contibuted just 10 points.

The Quotes

Kobe Bryant (Lakers): "Post. Post. Post,"..."What I would say if I was there right now...Pau get ur ass on the block and don't move till u get it"... Tweets by Kobe during the game

Steve Nash (Lakers): "I'm not myself, I'm not moving that well. I'm struggling a little bit. I probably had a few shots in there that I probably normally make, but I still think it's important to try and contribute. We don't have enough points in our lineup every night."

Manu Ginobili (Spurs): "It's impossible not to be reenergized. We were playing at home against the Lakers. It's a great moment to be energetic."..."The third quarter … used to be my moment, I know I'm not in my best shape, physically and basketball-wise, but I thought I had a little window there to try and risk. And it went good."
