- After the 2010-11 NBA Season Ron Artest legally changed his name to Metta World Peace
- In the 2009 offseason the Lakers signed Ron Artest to a 5-year deal using the team's mid-level exception that will pay him a total of $33.95 million with a player option for the last year. By signing him, the Lakers decided to let Trevor Ariza go. It was an unexpected move when everybody though the Lakers wanted to keep Ariza, a key member of the 2009 Championship team. But Artest will contribute his intimidating defense, he's strong and tough and knows how to shoot, rebound and pass.
- Defense being one of the keys to every championship team now the Lakers have two of the league best defenders on Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant. Artest was the 2004 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and in his pre-Lakers career he was member of the All-Defensive First Team twice, also twice member of the Second Team, once member of the All-NBA Third Team and averaged 16.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals over 10 NBA seasons.
- Despite being remembered for going into the stands to fight with a Detroit Pistons fan, which started the worst brawl in NBA history (he was suspended for 73 games), he arrived to L.A. after spending a year in Houston, where he showed he can behave almost like a model citizen. While in Houston he led the Rockets that without injured Yao Ming pushed the Lakers to a game 7 in the 2009 Western Conference semifinals. He finished among the league's top three in steals in 5 of the last 8 seasons.
- After one season wearing number 37 with the Lakers, in 2010-11 he switched back to 15, a number he previously used in Chicago and Indiana.
