Lakers Playoffs &
Reg. Season 2003/04

NBA Playoffs 2005

2004-05 LAKERS NEWS AND NOTES

4/21: more info about this awful season: The Lakers got two of the worst losing streaks in franchise history, the second longest with 8 games and the 4th with 6 games. They also finished 3 games behind the Clippers, and tied with the Warriors for 11th in the Western Conference and last in the Pacific Division...

4/20: With a 103-106 loss in Portland, the season finally came to an end. It couldn't have been worse, or yes, it could, but not by much. It was the 4th worst season in franchise history and only the 5th time the Lakers miss the Playoffs... With his 37 points against the Trail Blazers, Kobe Bryant became the 15th player to reach 14,000 points, and the youngest of them. He did it with 26 years and 240 days, while Michael Jordan reached 14,000 at 27 years, 68 days... Divac played in only 15 games this season, averaging 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds, really far away from what was expected from him... Kobe averaged 27.6 points, 2nd only to Allen Iverson, but he shot only 43.3% this season, his worst since 1997-98, his 2nd season... Highlights...

Around the NBA: Shaq, now in shape like you haven't seen him in years got the best record in the West... Lebron James had a terrific season with 27.2 pts, 7.4 reb, 7.2 ast and 2.2 steals, but his Cavaliers got tied with the Nets for the 8th place and missed the Playoffs, again... Indiana won the final regular season game of Reggie Miller's career and avoided Detroit in the first round of the Playoffs...

4/18: The season seams to be eternal for the Lakers... They were outscored 42-7 during an 11-minute span in the second half, were down by as many as 40 points and lost 126-99 to the... Golden State Warriors. With the 18th defeat in 20 games the Lakers will end the Season worse than the Clippers... Divac was suspended by the league for 2 games because he elbowed Shawn Bradley in the face during the Laker loss yesterday...

4/17: Kobe returned and scored 33 pts, including 14 in the 4th period when the Lakers gave their last effort of the season at the Staples Center, but 42 4th-quarter pts weren't enough and Dallas won 114-112. With just 2 road games ahead, the home record this season is 22-19, the worst since 1993-94 (21-20)...

4/15: The projected starting team for this season was Atkins, Bryant, Odom, Malone and Divac, but after a forgettable season the starting line up against Sacramento was Atkins, Walton, Jones, Butler and Mihm. Caron Butler scored 34 points (his season high)but the Lakers lost 115-106... Kobe was out to be with his ailing wife, who had an ectopic pregnancy and his status for the Lakers' final 3 games is uncertain...

4/11: The Lakers stayed close until the end but Phoenix is the best team in the NBA. They made 19 3-pointers (record for the Phoenix franchise and for a Laker opponent) and won the game 108-97. This way the Lakers fell 24 1/2 games behind the Suns in the West... At halftime the Lakers honored the 1984/1985 champions, a team that is probably the best of all times, listen to these names: Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Bob McAdoo, Jamal Wilkens, Byron Scott, Michael Cooper, Mitch Kupchak (current General Manager), coach Pat Riley and GM Jerry West. They had a 62-20 record in the Season and 14-4 in the Playoffs, beating the Celtics 4-2 in the Finals...

4/10: The Lakers went back to normality, played awful defensively, allowed 43 third-quarter points, were out rebounded 62-32 and lost to the Kings 124-105. It was the 14th defeat in 16 games for the Lakers who can't wait for this season (the worst in at least 11 years) to be over...

4/8: It doesn't matter if the Lakers are already out of the Playoffs and every game from now until the end of the season is meaningless. If Ray Allen is in the other team, it is personal for Kobe Bryant, who scored 42 pts, including 7 3-pointers, against Seattle to give his team a nice victory in the middle of the shadows of this season. Allen unnecessarily criticized Bryant during the season. It was 117-94 and Kobe scored 21 points in the fourth quarter...

4/7: The Lakers' season is officially over, but they can't stop losing. With Phil Jackson (the next coach?) watching the game from Jerry Buss' suite, they fell in front of Yao Ming, Tracy Mcgrady and the Rockets 114-100. Kobe had his 5th triple-double of the season with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists but he shot poorly, just 4-of-19...

4/5: Now it's official: the Lakers will miss the Playoffs for the 1st time in 11 years and only the 4th time since the franchise moved to LA in 1960. The Lakers were in the edge of elimination and the best team in the NBA gave them the final push. The Suns won 125-99... Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Chris Mihm couldn't play because of injuries. Mihm replaced Divac in the injured list and Vlade played 9 min in his 9th game of the season...

4/3: Numbers say the Lakers still can go into the playoffs but reality says otherwise. Kobe had to sit in the 2nd quarter with a bruised shin and the Grizzlies won 102-82. The Lakers were already playing without Odom and Mihm... Jerry West, who used to build championship teams for LA, is taking Memphis to the playoffs again...

4/2: In a season that is getting worse every game, it would have been strange to see Kobe Bryant making that final shot to win the game. But according to the team performance, Kobe missed it and the Spurs won 94-93 to sweep the series between the teams 4-0...

3/31: The Wolves and Lakers were the finalists of the Conference last Playoffs, but they are 9th and 10th in the west today. The game between them (105-96 for the Wolves) sent the Lakers 6 1/2 games away from the 8th place and left them without playoff hopes...

3/29: The win the Lakers were desperately needing, finally came against the Knicks 117-107. With 32 pts from Kobe and 26 from Butler the franchise stopped its 2nd longest losing streak since it moved to L.A. It ended 2 games shy of the 10-game streak of the 1993-94 season, the last time they missed the playoffs...

3/27: The Lakers can't stop the free falling and are in the middle of the second-longest losing streak in franchise history (8 losses). Even with Iverson shooting 5-for-28, the Sixers took their turn to defeat LA 96-89. The Lakers get rid of the problematic Payton just to get Atkins, who criticized Bryant after the game...

3/24: If the Lakers wanted to avoid being only the fifth team in franchise history to miss the playoffs, this was the game they had to win. But the Nuggets stood firm in the 8th spot of the playoff race, won the game 117-96 and sent the Lakers 5 1/2 games away with 14 games to go... Devean George, the only other remaining member of the three-peat, played for the first time after a season plagued with injuries. He scored 8 pts and took 5 reb in 16 minutes...

3/22: Things go from worse to worst for the Lakers: with Odom out because of a shoulder tear, Kobe made 9 3-pointers and scored 43 pts, but it's still not enough for this group that can't contain a mediocre team like Utah and lost its 6th in a row to fell 4 1/2 games behind the last playoff spot. It was 115-107 for the Jazz...

3/20: The Lakers lost 5 consecutive games for the 1st time since 1994. Kobe Bryant scored 16 pts in the final 8 1/2 min but he missed three 3-pointers in the final 22 sec and his team was defeated again by the Sonics, this time 102-100... The Lakers also fell to the 10th place in the playoff race...

3/18: Reggie Miller scored 39 pts, including 9 in the last minute to control the Lakers 103-97. Kobe, plagued with foul trouble, scored only 12 pts and Odom had a strained left shoulder...

3/17: Shaq and Wade made the Heat the best team in the East, and they were too much for these Lakers that depend completely on Bryant. Los Angeles lost 102-89 and fell 1 1/2 games behind Denver for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference...

3/15: Kobe Bryant was kept under control by the Philadelphia, and he couldn't get a helping hand from his teammates. He scored 20 pts while the other 4 starters combined for 24. Iverson ended with 36 and the Sixers got the win 108-91...

3/14: Since assuming the head coach position Frank Hamblen reinstalled the triangle offense rudiments, but against the Wizards his players played as if Tomjanovich were still the coach and tried 34 3-pointers. The problem was that they made only 10, lost 95-81 and couldn't get their second 3-game winning-streak of the season...

3/12: Some people still wonder if it was a good idea to keep Kobe at any cost. But be sure owner Jerry Buss had a big smile Saturday night when the game ended. Kobe scored 21 points in the 4th, including the winning shot with 0.9 seconds to play and the Lakers won 117-116... It was Kobe first winning shot of the season and the first time the Lakers win two in a row in the road...

3/10: In the first of six straight road games the Lakers recovered the 8th place in the West with a victory 100-95 over Dallas... Kobe scored 36 pts and was perfect from the free throw line in his first 6 attempts setting a franchise record with 43 in a row. The previous mark was owned by Gail Goodrich who twice scored 40 in a row in the '70s...

3/8: The Lakers lost to the Clippers (only for the 5th time in the last 33 games and the 2nd this season) 110-101, and fell to the 9th place in the Western, wich means that today they are out of the Playoffs. And it will become an uphill battle: 15 of their final 23 games are on the road... The only good thing is that Kobe is on fire, he scored 41 points (after 37 and 40 in the previous games)...

3/6: In the last game of Reggie Miller's career at Staples Center against the Lakers (unless both get to the NBA Finals, which seems highly improbable today), the Pacer almost recovered from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit, but with 2:16 a 5 points ahead the Lakers reacted and won 103-94... Kobe scored 37 points and held Miller to 11, on 5-of-16 shoting...

3/4: Kobe Bryant scored 40 points, including 10 in the final 2:14 of the game to help the Lakers avoid falling under the .500 mark... Despite shooting 1-for-18 from 3-point range, the Lakers defeated the Mavericks 108-103 at home, stopped a 4-game losing streak and kept the 8th place in the Playoff run...

3/2: Chucky Atkins had 29 points, including 14 in the final 6 minutes, and Kobe Bryant scored 26 pts but he missed a 3-point attempt with 4 seconds to go that would have tied the game. The Celtics won 104-101 and the Lakers extended their losing streak to 4...

2/28: With 3-pointers from Atkins, Odom, Butler and Bryant, the Lakers outscored the Knicks 14-2 in the final 1:16 of the 4th quarter. Kobe's 3-pointer tied the game with 4.4 sec to play. But these Lakers can't find themselves and lost in overtime 117-115. Luke Walton had a chance for the final shot but he sent the ball back to Kobe who wasn't expecting it...

2/27: Kobe Bryant finished with 31 pts, 8 reb and 8 assist against Toronto, but the Lakers gave up 65 points in the first half, couldn't score in the final 2:33 minutes (while Toronto scored 10 pts) and lost the game 108-102...

2/25: Three games in a row was good but the fourth was against the team that lately is the Lakers nightmare: the Detroit Pistons. And it was another loss, this time 111-90... The Pistons defeated the Lakers in five games in the 2004 NBA Finals and twice this season with a 20-point margin...

2/23: It took the Lakers 52 games to get a 3-game winning streak, with the doubtful honor of being the slowest team in franchise history to get to that mark. But it was a win and every win counts in the Playoffs race. With 31 pts from Kobe The Lakers defeated the Blazers 86-83 after Abdur-Rahim missed the a game-tying 3-point attempt at the final buzzer...

2/22: Chris Mihm scored 19 pts, took 15 boards, including 8 offensive and gave 4 blocks to his former team and the Lakers defeated his historical rival, the Boston Celtics 104-95. The Payton trade with Boston included Mihm, Atkins (5 pts) and Jumaine Jones (14 pts, 4 3-pt). Payton ended with 11pts and 5 assists. Rick Fox was also on that trade but he retired.

2/21: After the All-Star break, the Lakers have a big objective ahead, and we are not talking about winning the Championship or even the Division, we are talking about avoiding being the 4th Laker team in history to miss the playoffs. The Lakers are 26-24, 8th in the West and and will play 19 of the remaining 32 games on the road. It's time to see how good this team can be with Kobe and without Shaq...

2/20: For the first time since 1981 no one scored more than 20 points in this 2005 All-Star Game. Kobe Bryant had good numbers with 16 pts, 6 reb, 7 assists and 3 steals for the West but Allen Iverson was voted MVP of the game with 15 pts, 9 assists and 5 steals for the winner: the East. It was 125-115...

2/15: Kobe Bryant is ready for the All-Star Game. He scored 40 pts, gave 8 assists and stole 3 balls to lead the Lakers in a 102-95 victory over Utah... Odom could not play because of intestinal flu and Medvedenko was a starter for the 1st time this season...

2/13: Kobe Bryant returned after missing 14 games because of an ankle injury but the Lakers were defeated 103-89 by the Cavaliers. LA has lost 5 of the last 6 games and went 6-8 without Kobe... He was selected as a starter in the All-Star Game (Feb 20 at Denver) and will be the only Laker playing in that game...

2/10: In their first meeting since the 2004 NBA Finals the Pistons defeated the Lakers, again. This time 103-81. But it was different because these Lakers has nothing to do with those Lakers, exception made with Kobe Bryant and he is not ready to play yet... Detroit coach Larry Brown is included in the Laker's list of possible coaches (the others are Phil Jackson and Pat Riley)

2/9: The Nets were ahead by 10 with 5 minutes to play and Jason Kidd got his 2nd straight triple-double but the Lakers survived and won 104-103 in overtime at New Jersey...

2/7: The Lakers lost awfully to the Atlanta Hawks, the team with the league's 2nd-worst record, 114-108, to extend the losing streak to 3. They were already down by 29 points in the second quarter...

2/6: The Lakers recovered from a 16-point deficit in the 4th period and led by 3 in the final minute, but with Kobe Bryant still unavailable to play, Brian Cook took the final shot with 2.9 seconds to play, missed it and the Lakers fell 103-102 at Houston...

2/4: Kobe Bryant was selected starter for the 2005 All-Star Game with 1,815,952 votes in fan balloting. The other starters are Yao Ming, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady for the West and Shaquille O'Neal, Grant Hill, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter and LeBron James for the East...

2/3: In the first game after since Rudy Tomjanovich resigned as coach the Lakers failed to get a 3-game winning streak for the 10th time this season. It was Hamblen's first loss as Laker coach and it was the third loss against the Spurs this season. This time it was 103-91...

2/3: Coach Rudy Tomjanovich resigned today because of physical and emotional difficulties. In March 2003, while he was the Rockets coach, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He is cured now but he says he probably tried to come back too soon and he doesn't have the energy needed to play his role. He will remain with the team as a personnel consultant and will probably become a scout. He was the Laker coach for just 43 games...
The new coach could be the old coach: Phil Jackson. Meanwhile assistant Frank Hamblen will be leading the Lakers.

2/1: The Lakers won the game against Portland 92-79 but the news exploded before the game: Tomjanovich announced that he may quit because of health issues and the Lakers already have a candidate to replace him... believe it or not they are thinking about offering the job to Phil Jackson...

1/30: Tomjanovich was sick so assistant Frank Hamblen was the coach in the Lakers win 101-90 over the Bobcats. The Lakers had a big contribution from center Chris Mihm who scored 16 points, took 12 rebounds and gave 5 blocks...

1/28: The Lakers lost three in a row for the first time this season. Vince Carter scored 18 of his 30 points in the third quarter and the New Jersey Nets won 109-103... Los Angeles is 3-4 since Kobe Bryant sprained his right ankle against Cleveland...

1/26: The Lakers started to show that without Kobe Bryant they are not better than... the Clippers. Going against history the Lakers were completely dominated by their neighbors 105-89. Lamar Odom wasn't at the level expected from him, again. He scored 8 points...

1/25: The Lakers had a hard approach to reality, now they know they are a good team without Kobe, but not good enough to stand in front of top team like Seattle. They never had a chance against Ray Allen (25 pts) and his Sonics and fell 104-93. Radmanovic made 8 3-pointers...

1/21: Since Kobe Bryant went out because of an injury, Chucky Atkins is averaging 22.2 points and 7.8 assists, helping the Lakers go 3-1. This time he scored 25 pts and gave 10 assist to lead his team to a 105-101 victory over the Warriors...

1/19: Caron Butler took the place of Kobe Bryant, not only by playing the shooting guard for the first time in his career but by making the winning shot with 35 seconds left. Guided by Atkins' 25 pts (10 in the 4th) and 11 assists, the Lakers got a big win 93-90 over the Timberwolves...

1/17: It was a bad day for the Lakers: Utah scored 34 points in the 4th quarter (14 from Raja Bell) to defeat LA 102-94 at the Staples Center and Kobe Bryant was told that he will be out two more weeks because of a severely sprained right ankle...

1/15: The Lakers rallied from a 9-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Warriors 104-102. Lamar Odom made a layup with 1.3 seconds left, and the Lakers got the win without Kobe Bryant, who went to injured list with an sprained ankle...

1/13: The Lakers defeated Lebron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers 98-94 but Kobe Bryant played only 6 minutes and then "severely sprained" his ankle. He had to get carried off the court in front of a silent crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center. "It's the worst one I've ever had," Kobe said. He will be out at least a couple of weeks...

1/12: These Lakers seem to depend on their 3-point shot. Against Denver they made only 5 of 29 (.172) and lost 95-83, failing to win three consecutive games this season for the 7th time...

1/10: The Lakers made 16 of 35 three-point shots, one short of the franchise record for both attempts and makes. They also outscored Minnesota 38-20 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 105-96 victory...

1/7: Kobe Bryant had 27 pts and 10 ast and Odom added 20 pts to help the Lakers defeat Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and the Houston Rockets 111-104... This way the Lakers returned to the winning path after two bad loses in Texas... Kobe, T-Mac (26pts) and Bobby Sura (20pts) donated $1,000 for every point they scored to the UNICEF...

1/5: Jason Terry leaded Dallas with 28 points. He made 9 of 10 field goals, including 5 3-pointers in 5 attempts. Kobe scored 32 pts and Mihm added 17 pts, 10 reb and 4 blocks but the defense was awful and the Lakes lost badly for the second time in two days...

1/4: Bruce Bowen scored 24 points and did an excellent defensive job on Kobe Bryant to limit him to 17 points. The Spurs won the game 100-83 at San Antonio...

1/2: Kobe Bryant scored 42 pts, including the first 14 points for the Lakers in the fourth quarter to defeat Carmelo Anthony and his Denver Nuggets 99-91. It was Kobe's third straight 40-point game (42 - 48 - 42)...

12/28: Despite spraining his non-shoting shoulder in the 1st quarter, Kobe Bryant scored 48 points in 46 minutes, and the Lakers defeated the Raptors 117-99. Toronto played without Vince Carter, who was traded to the Nets last week...

12/25: The first game between Shaq and Kobe went to overtime and the Heat won 104-102... Shaq finished with 24 pts and 11 reb and was fouled out in the 4th quarter. Kobe scored 42, gave 6 ast and missed the final shot of the game that could have given the victory to the Lakers... The"Corvette" went to the "brick wall" (according to Shaq) 5 times with this result: Shaq blocked Kobe's first shot, Kobe scored over Shaq 22 seconds later, next time Shaq fouled Kobe who made both free throws in the 2nd quarter, finally they met two times in the 4th quarter and both times Kobe draw fouls from Shaq to send him to bench for good... The Lakers set a franchise record with 36 three-point attempts.

12/22:The Lakers defeated New Orleans 101-89. It was the third time this season and the Lakers had unusual contributions from Atkins with 30 points and from Mihm, who matched the highest total in the NBA this season with 21 rebounds (also a career-high for him)...

12/20: The Lakers shot only 32 percent from the field, including five 3-pointers in 28 attempts, didn't make a field goal in the final 6:52 and lost to the Grizzlies 82-72 in one of their worst performances of the season...

12/17: Bryant had his fourth triple-double of the season and 13th of his career (36 pts, 10 reb, 14 ast) but that doesn't seem enough for these Lakers and the Wizards won 120-116 in OT ...

12/16: The Lakers were needing a big victory and they found it in Sacramento. Kobe leaded his team with 31 points to a 115-99 win and the Kings lost for just the third time in 17 games...

12/14: Kobe Bryant (35 pts, 9 reb, 5 ast) won his match up with Ray Allen (26 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast) but the Sonics used Rashard Lewis' 37 points to defeat the Lakers 108-93...

12/11: The Clippers had a chance to tie the game but Corey Maggette's off-balance running jumper went in and out of the basket and the Lakers won 89-87. Kobe scored 37 pts and took 10 reb...

12/8: Kobe had the 12th triple double of his career with 20 pts, 14 reb and 11ast, but the Suns finished the game with a 19-3 run, including a 3-pointer by Quentin Richardson that sealed the score 113-110 with 6.9 seconds to play... The Suns made 16 3-pointers, the most by a Laker opponent since the 3-point line was established in 1979...

12/3: Kobe Bryant didn't shoot the ball well but he had the 11th triple double of his career with 10 pts, 12 reb and 10 assists. Caron Butler scored 27 pts and the Lakers returned to the victory, 97-88 over the Warriors... Derek Fisher played a regular-season game against the Lakers for the 1st time in his career. He received a loud ovation from the Fans at the Staples Center and had 4 points and 2 assists in 19 minutes.

11/30: Brian Cook has his best NBA performance with 25 pts (including 5 3-pointers) and 11 reb, both career-highs, to take the Lakers to a 95-90 victory over the Bucks. Kobe couldn't find his shot after the 1st quarter, but he guided the offense with 11 assists and provided the play of the game when he blocked Redd's dunk attempt with the Lakers ahead 92-88...

11/23: On the night of the return of center Vlade Divac to the Lakers, Kobe Bryant scored 10 of his 30 pts in the 4th quarter to lead the team to another victory. It was 100-96 over the Bucks. Kobe's defense on All-Star guard Michael Redd was almost perfect and limited him to 6 pts... Divac played his 1st game in a Laker uniform since 1996. He had missed the first 11 games of the season because of a herniated disk in his lower back. He played just 5 min. and was scoreless...
