May 8 - Dallas. The Lakers' hopes of another three-peat ended and so did Phil Jackson's illustrious career. Sadly, this game wasn't the best way for the best coach in NBA history to leave. The Lakers were humiliated by Dallas and some players (Odom and Bynum) couldn't handle it and lost their composure in a 122-86 loss that completed the 4-0 sweep. If the Lakers defensive rotation on game 3 was bad, this time it was a disaster and that combined with the Mavericks' good ball movement and the incredible night they had from behind the 3- point line made it a nightmare for Los Angeles. The Mavs started to get on fire in the second quarter when Jason Terry made 5 three-pointers to personally outscore the Lakers 20-16. Terry, who had 32 points, tied a playoff record with a total of 9 threes. As a team the Mavs also tied 3-pointers records with 11 in the first half and 20 in the game while shooting an fantastic 20-of-32, a 62.5%. Even though the game was emotionally already over by halftime with Dallas ahead 63-39, the Lakers useless attempts to do something against the rain of threes in the second half produced frustration on Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum who got themselves ejected making the situation unworthy of the Lakers rich tradition. Odom was whistled for a flagrant foul for setting a hard illegal screen on Dirk Nowitzki early in the fourth quarter, and 45 seconds later JJ Barea (22 points) was on mid air for another layup when Bynum appeared from nowhere just to hit Barea's ribs with his elbow, badly. The Lakers's pivot was immediately ejected and with him went the Lakers final attempts to end their coach's career with some dignity. Phil Jackson coached the Bulls and the Lakers and got and NBA best 11 Championships. His career playoff record went to the books at 229-104, the most wins and the highest winning percentage (.688) in NBA playoff history. His regular-season winning percentage of .704 is another all-time best. This was the first time he was swept in 20 years of coaching. The Lakers couldn't break the trend: now teams trailing 0-3 are 0-99 in NBA playoff history |

The QuotesPhil Jackson (LAL Coach): about his caree..."It's been a wonderful run" about Dallas... "I don't think I've seen a team play to that level in a series in a game like they played this afternoon." "We all know they always come back and get themselves back in the race. The Lakers are going to survive." Kobe Bryant (Lakers): ""I grew up under him (Jackson). The way I approach things, the way I think about things -- not only basketball, life in general -- comes from him. It's a little weird for me to think of what next year is going to be like." |
